In planning your vacation to Jamaica there is always a celebration that you can participate. There are various events that await you and if you miss the more popular cheap Jamaica holidays, there is something for you anytime of the year. The diverse blend of people living in Jamaica offers a very unique culture and this can be seen also through some of the festivals. Apart from the traditional holiday celebration that is held in Jamaica, there are other festivals such as cultural, heritage, food and music.

There is a festival held on January 6 annually called the Accompong Maroon Festival and is held in honor of Captain Cudjoe. This is a festival that is celebrated through traditional singing, dancing, feasts, blowing the Abeng horn and playing the war drums and is expressing the historical and cultural heritage of the island.

This one of kind festival is celebrated on the western side of Jamaica by the maroons who come together each year to mark the triumph over the British with a full day of activities. The maroon name is said to be Spanish and means untamed and wild, as when they lived in the hills they wild and free. The festival is a combination of the slave’s rites from the Arawak’s past and old African traditions and is day full of remembrance. Everyone is welcome to attend this festival which can last up to four days.

There are some festivals that are held in observance of the Chinese New Year, the Muslims Hosay and the Hindus Diwali. These celebrations also attract a big crowd of people who participate in the events and if you are an observer and wish to get involved you are welcome to join in the festivals.

In the month of February, there is a week long celebration in remembrance of the legendary Bob Marley who celebrates his birthday on February 6. The events will vary each year and thousands of people from around the world and Jamaica would gather to celebrate his work and life.

There is also the Yam festival, this is a heritage and cultural type which is takes place each year in the parish of Trelawny. The influx of people going to this festival yearly has cause the organizers to extend the number of days the festival is held for, from one to seven days. This festival is held over the Easter holidays also and the big finale after the seven days is on the Easter Monday.

For the coffee lovers, there is also The Jamaica Coffee Festival that is held each in Kingston during the fall. This festival celebrates the agricultural tradition that is rich in Jamaica and will feature samples of hot beverages, coffees and other food items.

There is another festival that celebrates our rich heritage that is held also in Kingston each fall. This is the Heritage Fest, celebrating the dance, music and the food while exploring the diverse people that make up Jamaica. Heritage Fest pays respect to all ethnicities, from the Chinese fortune telling, the Indian curry and the Lebanese dancing, they can all be found living in Jamaica.
